Saturday diversion / flawed sportsman edition

the best game, a complicated star
(No, not tomorrow’s game.) Props to Andy Pettitte on retiring. It was a pleasure to watch him all those years, all those Octobers, and darn they are going to miss him. (If you are a healthy left-hander, call 1-800-Y A N K E E and ask for Cash; tell him Manhattan Loft Guy sent you.)

Small Andy always struck me as a keep-your-head-down-and-mouth-shut type, a relative rarity these days for high achievers. His legacy got very complicated over his HGH admissions, obviously, and I suspect that a major factor in not pitching this year is his scheduled (devastating) appearance against his former friend and mentor, the defendant Roger Clemens. Even with the HGH, he comes across as (eventually, ultimately) a stand-up guy. Unlike another guy I could mention (have mentioned!). But I don’t believe he should even think about the Hall, unlike (this surprised me) Rob Neyer.

Thank you, sir. Enjoy your kids.
