Happy 3rd Kidneyversary

life is good (pass it on)

Long-time readers of Manhattan Loft Guy probably got the hint in yesterday’s diversion (September 3 , holiday diversion is a reprise), but there is no need to merely hint today: three years ago today my left kidney got a new custodian, and it has been keeping Susan healthy these last 1,096 days. Keep up the good work, little buddy!

You’ll get all the details you want (and more!) in these posts, with the odd one (Jan 20, 2010) having a pdf of a school newsletter that explains how this came about.

September 4, 2009 – do any of you people know how to pray?
January 20, 2010 – adventures in nephrology / about that kidney donation….
September 4, 2010 – Happy Kidneversary Day to all
September 4, 2011 – so a man walks into a restaurant with his kidney, and their spouses … ? Happy 2nd Kidneversary!

This year we have put off our anniversary dinner a week, what with the beginning of the school year and some family stuff on Susan’s side. The particularly happy news for Susan’s family this weekend was the wedding of her niece. And check this out … When I sent her sister (the Mother of The Bride) a note of congratulations, her response to me was “Very thankful [Susan] is able to be with us. Thank you!”

A donated kidney is, truly, the gift that keeps on giving. In many directions, in many ways. My life is so much more rich for having ‘lost’ a kidney.

here comes Sally Struthers!
You know what is coming … the appeal to do something good, today. My idea is that you sign up as an organ donor for the time when you no longer need your organs. It is quick and easy at www.DonateLifeNY.org.

If you have a different way to do something good today, feel free to improvise. And send some warm thoughts my way, and Susan’s, on our anniversary.
